It would be hard to find a more universally recognised figure than His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism.

Buddhism runs deep in Tibetan identity. However, opposition to religion is a core principle in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), with CCP members banned from practicing a religion, and repressive policies and arbitrary policing in Tibet. In Chinese-occupied Tibet, having a photo of the Dalai Lama is considered reason enough to have you arrested. The CCP has gone so far as to release a decree to control the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, which they stipulate “must comply with Chinese laws and regulations.”

The protection of Tibetan religious identity is about human rights. ATC is beginning a pledge campaign to put the CCP on notice. Tibet supporters around the world know that they are aiming to interfere with the succession of the Dalai Lama; we know that they are planning to control the next Dalai Lama – and we don't accept this.

The US Government has already passed the Tibet Support Policy Act that states "The Tibetan Policy and Support Act would make it official United States policy that the succession of Tibetan Buddhist leaders, including the succession of the Dalai Lama, be left solely to Tibetan Buddhists to decide, without interference from the Chinese government."

ATC is aiming to secure a similar guarantee from the Australian Government that they also will not accept Chinese Government interference in Tibetan religious affairs.
